As i watched the latest episode of the Legend of K Korra I tried to figure out how Tarlok would have gained the Ability to Blood Bend. We know the only two people in ATLA who could blood bend were Hama and Katara.
After Katara learned the technique, she only used it twice. Once on Hama and once on the Captain of the Southern Raider’s Ship. It is hard to believe that she would have used it anywhere else, since she hated the technique. After the war, she probably taught the technique to Aang just in case of an emergency. I am also assuming that Korra is able to blood bend as well, but only during the full moon because Katara was her water bending teacher. Which means that Katara only passed the technique on to the Avatar’s and no one else.
This leaves Hama, who was taken to another prison after her run of terror in the fire nation village. This is my theory. After learning of the way she escaped the prison last time the fire nation locked her up in a prison that sees no direct view from the moon, and deep enough to where the moon’s energies were too muted for her to be able to blood bend. He she met a young water bender captured during the war, his name was Yakone. Together they developed a technique that allows the user to blood bend with out the use of the full moon, and possibly in broad daylight.
Soon the war ends and fire lord Zuko releases all of the prisoners of the war and allows them to return to their villages. Hama passes away before she can make it back to her village due to her old age. However, Yakone, who now knows the new and improved blood bending technique waits until his chance to rise to power and tries to use that technique on republic city. Avatar Aang stops him.
So now, that the line has been drawn to Yakone, the only remaining possibility is that Tarlok learned blood bending from Yakone and then he rose in power to one of the seats in the council.
To summarize: Hama to Katara to Aang and Korra
Hama to Yakone to Tarlok
That’s my theory on blood bending.
